Claire Brewster: A Conference of Birds
Audubon magazine referred to her work as ‘avian cartography’ and the Financial Times deemed it ‘exquisitely ethereal’. Using primarily old maps and atlases as her canvas, Claire Brewster carves remarkably intricate images into the landscapes of years passed … breathing movement and life into the two dimensional relics. Speaking of the detailed bird carvings for which she is best known, Claire explains:
“I work in two different ways, really. Sometimes a map is just asking for a particular bird—I’m not sure why; I just see it and know that is right for the map and the bird. And sometimes I get an idea for a piece and use a map because it relates to the birds or the idea I have.”
In 2012, she was invited to be an inaugural member of the Perrier Jouet Art Salon and Prize. And in January of 2016, the same month her work was featured on the cover of Elle Decor, a special issue dedicated to “the best of our international editions”, Claire Brewster became the newest artist at Diehl Gallery, her sole US representative gallery.
Event Information
Claire Brewster’s A Conference of Birds debuts at Diehl Gallery in September of 2016 in conjunction with the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival. Please join us for the opening reception on Friday, September 9th from 5-8pm. Works will be displayed through October 31, 2016.
This exhibition will support the Teton Raptor Center which aims to benefit birds of prey by offering educational programing, conservation research, and rehabilitation services. Collectors are invited to write 5% of the investment cost of works in the exhibition directly to the Teton Raptor Center (www.tetonraptorcenter.org).

Having lived and worked in London for the past 20 years, she is a fixture in the UK art community and has been invited to exhibit at the London Art Fair for six consecutive years. "My inspiration comes from nature and the urban environment in which I live and a desire to re-use the discarded, unwanted and obsolete." |
Since I could first pick up a pencil, art was the only thing I was really interested in. My journey to become a professional artist has involved living in Spain and Romania and working for a high profile architects practice, amongst other things, whilst always working away on my art. |
Nature is ever present, even in the most urban environments, taking over wherever we neglect, living in a separate yet parallel universe. I take my inspiration from the natural environment, creating entomological installations of flora and fauna from imagined locations. My birds, insects and flowers transcend borders and pass freely between countries with scant regard for rules of immigration or the effects of biodiversity.
The sculptures are either pinned directly onto the wall as a large scale installation or captured in box frames. The shadows created when light is shined on them creates a dynamic three-dimensional quality and creates a feeling of movement.
