A tree is a perfect symbol of nature’s elements. It is rooted in earth, raised on water, roused with wind and reaching for fire.
Anastasia Kimmett’s newest body of work focuses on trees, using dissected paintings on paper as the building blocks. In nature, any being that dies is reused to create new life. Similarly, Kimmett destroys her work in order to use the parts to build back and create something new and whole. In this way, she is paying tribute to these magnificent and important plants and the processes of nature associated with them.
These works are constructed from elements of new and past projects. Pieces of her original paintings that have been saved and stored over the last decade were re-explored. Sections that were once ocean, rock, cloud etc. were carved out, sanded, shredded, distressed, oxidized, dyed, detailed and completely repurposed to become new elements or components for this series of trees. Many of these works, built with pieces of paintings, are layered, textured and more sculptural.
The methods of construction involve many processes including those used in fashion design, weaving, drafting, graphic design, carpentry and many more.
