DONALD MARTINY: New Works - The River Series
Jul 20 – Aug 15, 2017
New Works - The River Series
July 20th – August 15th, 2017
155 West Broadway, Jackson Hole
Opening Reception: Thursday, July 20th, 2017
The River Series by Donald Martiny continues the artist's exploration of pushing past art barriers imposed by the restrictions of a canvas. By eschewing traditional geometric forms Martiny's work becomes a part of the viewer's space, thereby directly involving the viewer in the dialogue of the work. Martiny's work is an intersection between painting and sculpture, neither wholly one nor the other, but undeniably both. This world his art inhabits allows him and his art to break through conventional thinking of how we categorized art. Instead it becomes its own unique experience.
The new body of work moves away from Martiny's earlier forms, which referenced more traditional painting methods and instead looks to the flowy rhythm of water. Each piece undulates and moves with an underlying cadence, as unique to it as a river's course is to it. Martiny has further expanded this series with his interplay between different finishes to the paint. A matte work will have a streak of glossy paint running through it, or a work will have an unexpected translucency showing the color beneath it.
Donald Martiny's newest work, The River Series, pushes towards new sources of inspiration, while contining to further his overall ideals.
