Diehl Gallery is pleased to present Helen Durant’s third solo exhibition: Life Lines.

In this show, we will highlight Durant’s newest body of work, one that was born during the throes of the Covid pandemic. There is a noticeable shift in these pieces – not in a dramatic way, as her signature style of gestural lines and strong use of color remains, but rather the change is in the character of her subjects. They are all staring directly at the viewer, perhaps as a challenge or a plea, or perhaps a little bit of both. There is an extraordinary strength in the new work and its’ subjects, but also a kind of openness and vulnerability. Even the title of the show suggests some kind of entreaty, a desire to reach out, to connect, and to be saved.

This body of work reminds us of the importance of our interconnectedness, both between people and the beings of the natural world. It underscores the very perceptible shift in psychology that has affected us all during this pandemic. These works are darker, slightly foreboding. Most of the animals are singular and alone yet appealing to the viewer as they look out directly from the paintings.

Durant has challenged herself in these pieces, and for her, they break new ground.  Ultimately, and most importantly, they are honest.
