Pop art lives on at Diehl Gallery

February 16, 2023 - Tibby Plasse

Steeped in commerciality, pop art made an aesthetic out of material culture. The transcendence of commodity into art has magnified into modern marketing campaigns, but the fine art of pop art still exists to be appreciated.

A thread of nostalgia ties the artists and their work together, or, as Diehl Gallery Director Devin Hardy said: “It’s an immortalization and apotheosis of celebrities, objects and images from a bygone era.”

A particular advantage sculpture has over painting is that this three-dimensional form of art shares the same space with you. Review: In Hung Liu exhibition, Golden Gate serves as metaphor for immigrant experience

July 17, 2021 - Letha Ch'ien

With the familiar landmark as its subtitle, “Hung Liu: Golden Gate” opens Saturday, July 17, at the de Young Museum, featuring eight works by contemporary Chinese-born American artist Hung Liu. The show asks us to think about migration, history, honor and memory. What does it mean to cross a bridge? Whose history do we remember? For Liu, the answer is in her art: “The surface will be a memorial site.”

FAENA CLOUD BUILDING Commissioned by Faena Art

Artwork title: “Sora Versailles”, 133 x103 ft, printed mesh

VERSAILLES HOTEL

3425 COLLINS AVENUE, MIAMI BEACH

This large-scale installation examines perception, as the historic Versailles Building is transformed into the sky itself, becoming void-like or transparent. The installation investigates one’s relationship to time as sunset and sunrise are depicted on the four sides of the building.

The Japanese kanji  is pronounced “Sora” and means sky or heaven. This word also has another reading, pronounced “kū” and means “emptiness or void”. Void is one of the five elements (earth, water, fire, wind, void). “Sora Versailles” installation is inspired by the idea of both sky and emptiness. In Buddhism as well as in Quantum Physics, the fundamental nature of reality is that all constituent forms that make up the universe are temporary, a concept termed ‘Sunyata.’ Artist Miya Ando pays homage to the  building’s original architect Roy France’s design philosophy of “let in the air and sun” as she wraps one of Miami’s most iconic buildings in clouds.

In the galleries: ‘Evolving Traditions’ from a nontraditional artist

May 11, 2018 - Mark Jenkins

The traditional element in Takefumi Hori’s art is gold and occasionally silver leaf, applied with a nontraditional abandon. The artist, also a Japan-rooted New Yorker, splits Long View Gallery’s “Heavy Metal” with Eve Stockton, whose recent woodcut prints employ organic forms and silver ink.

Hori applies metal leaf thickly and unevenly, sometimes scrawling atop the surface. If the nuances are spontaneous, the layouts are tidy. The painter sometimes bisects his compositions, grounding fields of messy gold at the top with blocks of strong, single-color pigment on the bottom. Hori’s calligraphic gestures verge on the chaotic, but they’re contained in a strictly geometric cosmos.
